How PrEP Works
PrEP is a new HIV prevention strategy. It is part of a global HIV prevention strategy (Condoms, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), Screening, ...).
Prophylaxie : C'est éviter une infection (ici le VIH).
Pré-Exposition : Le traitement doit se prendre avant (et après) un éventuel contact avec le VIH.
La PrEP s'adresse aux personnes qui n'ont pas le VIH et consiste à prendre un médicament afin d'éviter de se faire contaminer. Ce principe est aussi utilisé pour prévenir d'autres maladies comme le Paludisme ou encore certaines pathologies cardiovasculaires.
Il est important de différencier la PrEP et le traitement post-exposition (TPE). En effet le TPE est un traitement d'urgence ( maximum 48h après l'exposition) alors que la PrEP se prend avant l'exposition aux VIH.
On confond aussi souvent PrEP et TASP. Les TASP sont les traitements donnés aux personnes vivant avec le VIH.
La PrEP protège uniquement contre le VIH. Elle ne protège donc pas des infections comme la Gonorrhée ou encore les Hépatites A / B / C.
La PrEP ne protège pas d'une grossesse non désirée. Il est donc nécessaire de combiner la PrEP à un préservatif.
