Donovanosis, the STI worrying Europe

Donovanosis or granuloma inguinale

Summary

Donovanosis or granuloma inguinale

Donovanosis is a tropical STI rapidly expanding in Europe. It is called the "flesh-eating disease." It is a bacterial disease that attacks the immune system. It can lead to sepsis. Like all STIs, it increases the risk of contracting HIV. Condoms remain the only effective means of prevention. There are antibiotic treatments that cure the disease.

What is Donovanosis?

Donovanosis or granuloma inguinale is a sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by the bacterium "Klebsiella granulomatis."

This rare disease, initially from Southeast Asia, is rapidly expanding in 2021.

It affects men more. The ratio is 2 cases in men for 1 in women. Transmission occurs during sexual intercourse (oral, vaginal, or anal).

Granuloma inguinale increases the risk of HIV contamination. This characteristic is not specific to granuloma inguinale but to all STIs.

The terminal stage of the disease can lead to tissue destruction. This is why it is nicknamed the "flesh-eating disease."

The Expansion of Donovanosis

This infection is arriving in Europe and the USA, where about a hundred cases are reported annually.
In Europe, the number of cases has been growing rapidly since 2016. Donovanosis was slowed down in 2020, but its expansion exploded in 2021.
This rare disease is concerning; its symptoms have significant consequences. Without treatment, the disease can lead to sepsis.

Sepsis: A generalized infection caused by bacteria. It causes a strong demand on the immune system, which weakens it.
Immunocompromised individuals are at risk of superinfection. Immunosuppression: Immune system weakened by bacteria/viruses. The immune system cannot handle various infections.
Immune system: It brings together the various natural defenses of the human body.

Symptoms of granuloma inguinale

Painless nodules appear 10 to 40 days after contact with the bacteria. Genital ulcers are painless and similar to those of Syphilis.

For men, the disease is primarily localized in the genital area

For women, the disease is primarily vulvar or perineal.

Its development leads to the spread of the infection, which causes internal and external tissue destruction.

Without treatment, the infection continues to destroy tissues. The destructive nature of granuloma inguinale increases the risk of superinfection.

Disease Prevention

Nothing protects better against STIs than using condoms.

It's the safest way to protect yourself!!!

Screening and Treatment

In men, clinical diagnosis can be made by a dermatologist upon simple visual inspection of the ulcers.

In women, the identification of "Donovan bodies" allows for diagnosis through a smear test.

Treatment (antibiotics) lasts 21 days, and must be taken until the end of the course.
