HIV vs AIDS: What are the differences?
It is very common to confuse HIV and AIDS. In this article, you will discover the differences between HIV and AIDS.
HIV and AIDS are too often terms that are confused and mixed up. However, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are not the same thing.
Being infected with HIV does not necessarily mean one has contracted AIDS, but conversely, a person with AIDS invariably has HIV.
In summary, if an individual is HIV-positive and does not receive treatment, they will then become an AIDS patient.
Primary infection: This period covers the infestation of the body by the virus (HIV). There are not necessarily physical symptoms. The body tries to fight the infection, and the immune system develops antibodies. During this phase, there is a high risk of transmission.
Asymptomatic phase: Once the body is contaminated with HIV, a stage can follow that lasts for years, between 5 and 10 years, during which no symptoms are observed. The immune system weakens, the number of CD4 lymphocytes decreases, and the individual is then said to be "HIV-positive." However, it is still not referred to as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
Acceleration phase: The immune system becomes increasingly weak, and the virus intensifies, significantly reducing the number of CD4 lymphocytes.
AIDS stage: The individual who was HIV-positive is now an AIDS patient. So-called opportunistic diseases multiply and cause the immune system to collapse; cancers can develop. Without antiretroviral treatment, this stage can be fatal.
HIV = inactive form of the disease
AIDS = active form of the disease
