 The screening test
To take a test is always a voluntary act, and it is 100% reliable.
How to make a test ?
The test can be prescribed by a doctor (fully reimbursed by socialized medicine) or practised by a screening center, anonymously and free of charge. There
exists at least one center in each town.
When to take a test ?
In theory, all persons who have had unprotected sexual relations, or have used an unclean needle, should take a test.
To take a test early is not necessary, but you do not have to wait 3 months after having taken a risk as previously believed. The test has to be done two weeks
following the last sexual encounter. This delay is necessary for the antibody to appear, which will permit the identification of the HIV virus.
Is it necessary to renew the test ?
When an early test has been done, it is necessary to verify the results three months later.
How much time before learning the results ?
The amount of time can vary. Many anonymous and free of charge centers, especially in the Paris area, reveal the results 8 days after the test.
Who announces the result ?
The family doctor who has prescribed the test, gives the result. In this case, the laboratory sends him the result, or the doctor of the screening center.
Theoritically, the test results must not be given by mail, or by phone, but unfortunately, it happens sometimes.
What are the consequences of the test ?
They are obviously different according to the results.
If the results are positive, a blood test will be necessary, in addition to adequate medical follow-up.
